Weirdo!!
What in the world is so weird about a "two thumbs up" smiley? It just so happened that I placed a comment on a fellow blogger's tagboard, and for some reason, it has been considered "weird". Oh well, I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In my opinion, the smiley is only a smiley, but my friend told me that it was very sarcastic.
^__^O (Sweat drop)
Anyway, as I was saying, different people view things differently. My usual dress code resembles that of a typical nerd. Thick spectacles with lenses that contain a degree of 600+. School trousers that are worn high above the hip. School shirt properly tucked in on all sides. Last but not least, the very object that has made me famous among the St. John community -- my yellow Skippy Peanut Butter bag, worn not at waist level but on shoulder level. =p My friend, also in St. John, told me that one of his friends from the NCO Camp, told him that she had seen his "nerdy" ACS (I) friend who was carrying a Skippy bag >.<
Many of my friends have told me to change the bag into one that is not as conspicuous. Yellow. Look around this island called Lion City and try looking for a yellow bag. Not faded yellow or pumpkin yellow. Just bright yellow. Find it, and there's a high chance that it's me, especially on a Saturday:) You know how the saying goes. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. (Actually, it is broken, because one of the zippers was broken >.<) Maybe I should get Skippy to pay me for the free advertising =P
Moving on, if you look at what most teens wear when they are not schooling, you'll find that their shirts are usually white or black in colour. Not me, I wear other colours like green or blue or whatever. Even when I go out, my trousers are still worn high above the hip, and my shirt is still neatly tucked in. Why? Maybe it is a family tradition. My three brothers also dress exactly like me, and when we go out together during weekends, it's like a gathering of nerds :D
Now, after all of that ranting? You may be asking me what is the purpose of me saying all these. I'm just saying that we should venture to be different at times. The original purpose of wearing low jeans, messing up your hair, wearing colours like black and all, is to look different. Since the Generation Y tend to dress in the opposite way, wearing dull colours, and having a more conservative look, the Generation X try to be different. However, if everyone on the street is dressing like that, the new "normal" look becomes what was originally known as different. Now, by trying to be different, you look normal. And by trying to be normal, you look different. I know that I am not making sense here, but why try to conform or stand out? Instead of gauging ourselves by the standards of others, why don't we gauge ourselves by our own standards? So what if people laugh at us? What's important is what we perceive of ourselves.
As Rene Descartes said, "Cognito Ergo Sum" or "I think therefore I am". Philosophically, what Descartes means is that he knows he exists because he thinks. However, we can look at it from a different perspective -- we are whatever we think we are. If we tell ourselves that we are clever, handsome, strong, brave or any other macho phrase, then we are. Who is to tell me that I am stupid, ugly, weak, cowardly or anything else? So long as I believe in myself and my own ability, as well as believe that I possess whatever traits mentioned above, then who in the world can stop me?
So my fellow bloggers, rather than doing our best to conform to the masses, let's frolic in our own individuality, like boring, weird me. By the way, I agree with my friends that I am weird, nerdy and all, but it's not that I'm trying to be different. I just like being that way :D Hooray for me!
(And I guess my Skippy bag is here to stay)
